Steven K Ahlfeld MD
           
Steven K. Ahlfeld, MD has been in private practice in Indianapolis as an orthopaedic surgeon since 1984. During that time he has become a recognized leader in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. Many of Dr. Ahlfeld's patients are competitive or recreational athletes, who have suffered some type of sports-related injury.

Dr. Ahlfeld knows what it takes to be a competitive athlete. As a college student, he was a member of Indiana University's basketball team, and was a member of three consecutive Big Ten Championship Teams. In 2006, Dr. Ahlfeld was inducted to the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame.  In 2007, he received the distinquished Clevenger Award from Indiana University.  He was proud to be named Team Physician of the Year by the Indiana State Medical Association in 2008.  Also, in 1996, Dr. Ahlfeld was honored to be named to the Indiana University Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team.

Following graduation from Indiana University, Dr. Ahlfeld attended IU School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1979. After completing his orthopaedic surgery residency training at IU, Dr. Ahlfeld received his specialty fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the University of Oregon. His research interests during his fellowship training included knee ligament injuries and other common sports medicine conditions.

Dr. Ahlfeld is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Sugery and has a subspecialty board certification in sports medicine. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Assiociation of North America. He also holds membership in the Indiana State Medical Association as well as numberous other societies and professional associations. He has authored several articles and scientific papers on sports-related injuries and general orthopaedic topics. Has served on a national expert panel on the topic of basketball injuries presented by the American College of Sports Medicine. He also served as Chief Medical Officer fo the Pan American Games in Indianapolis.  Dr. Ahlfeld reviews research publications for the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Ahlfeld and his wife Helen have two sons, Adam and Chris. In his leisure time, Dr. Ahlfeld enjoys spending time with his family and working with various youth and church organizations.

Matthew Sowder DPT

Matthew Sowder DPT, CSCS has been managing the rehabilitation clinic at Ahlfeld Sports Medicine since 2009. Dr. Sowder earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Indiana University – Indianapolis in 2008 after obtaining his Bachelor degree from Indiana University – Bloomington in 2005. He has also been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) since 2007 and is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association. 

Dr. Sowder specializes in sports medicine rehab as well as musculoskeletal overuse injuries.  As a former Carmel H.S. runner and football player, he developed his passion for sport and healthy living.  He has coached track & field at various programs, competed in several distance events and adventure races and played football semi-professionally for the Indiana Tornados.  Dr. Sowder leads the rehabiliation program for all patient undergoing surgery as well as non-operative patients that do not require a surgical procedure. 

Away from the office, Dr. Sowder and his wife Alexis enjoy spending time with their son, Mitchell.  He also enjoys working out, golfing, bowling and attending all Colts and IU home games.
